Most of us are familiar with the story of Achan. He was the soldier in Joshua’s army that thought God’s directions didn’t really apply to him and that the consequences of disobedience would not be enforced if his disobedience was never found out. Only when the inevitableness of his discovery was before him did he confess and I am not sure he repented of anything except for being caught and the consequences of his discovery. He paid with his life and his family suffered with him. Sin is never to be trifled with. When temptation comes we should run to Jesus, hide in His strength and it will never become sin. When we do sin, it should break our hearts and we should see it as against God and repent of our disobedience quickly or our conviction will turn to judgment and we will pay the penalty alone.
After Achan’s judgment and Ai’s destruction Joshua took Israel between the mountains of Blessings and Curses with the Ark in the valley between the mountains. Obedience releases blessings, disobedience releases curses. How simple God’s way is. Lord help me be obedient in the small things so when the big temptation comes my decisions will rest upon the foundation of past obedience and trust in You.
